What to Wear - Fall Photo Edition

This question comes up a lot! What do I wear for fall family photos? What do I put my kids in? What in the world do I get my husband to wear? I know, it can be overwhelming, so I put together several options along with some tips for pulling together cute and mostly timeless family photos!

First, the tips:

1) Don't wear all white or all black. Why? All white in a photo can really drown you out and doesn't add any pizazz to your photo. All black is boring and doesn't come across well, IMO. Even if you just add a colorful top and everyone is wearing dark pants/bottoms - that is a far better option!

2) Choose a fall color palette. This doesn't mean everything you wear has to be orange or brown. And it definitely doesn't mean everyone has to be wearing the exact same pattern or color (please no). It just means that you choose a color or pattern and then work off of it. If I chose brown as my main color, then I would choose a lighter taupe shade for my husband, and probably a patterned shirt for my son. If I wanted to wear a floral dress that was mostly navy, I'd have my husband wear a dark blue button down and my son wear a blue patterned flannel.

3) Don't go over the top with trends. You know how when you look back at your wedding photos and you cringe a little because you had the high hair and the ultra long french nails? It will become a more timeless photo if you stick to timeless looks. Maybe leave the ultra ripped denim at home, and the gucci belt in your closet. Opt for dark wash denim and a regular belt to go with your trendy top.

4) Choose your outfit first, and then style the family around it. Let's be real here, mom is the star of the show when it comes to Family Photos and when everyone gathers around you for the picture, you want your outfit to be the standout pattern or style and everyone else to have a way to blend in and "meld together". If you choose the kiddos outfits first and then you find the most amazing dress that doesn't go well with what you already picked out for the kids? You have to start all over again! Make it easier on yourself and get your outfit picked out and then pull everyone else together.

I put together a few options just to give you an idea of a cohesive color palette that spotlights Mama! Mama's Dress and Booties are Nordstrom and all other pieces for the fam are Old Navy. Shop this look here on my Liketoknow.it page here:

This next collage is a little different! Let me know what you think of these choices! All linked here in my liketoknow.it page.

If you don't take fall photos, do you take Christmas photos? Or do you forego the process all together? We definitely didn't used to do any annual family photos (which I actually regret) but I do try to do something every season now because I think its fun to dress up and I also like to see how much we've changed over the years.

If you take fall photos, what are some of your favorite fall looks? XOXO Alyssa
